The PCIe slots on your Maximus VIII HERO Z170 are designed to work together as a unified system. You can technically use all six slots without losing functionality, but the layout and performance depend on how you configure them. The manual specifies different slot types—some for multiple x16 lanes, others for single x4 or x8. To access all slots, you can set them to use only x1 mode, which will restrict you to the three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots while keeping the others available. This way, you maintain full access to all expansion options.
