Visually? Some pins are bent or absent on PGA chips (mainly AMD's up to AM4), certain chips lack capacitors at the bottom of LGA models (Intel from Socket 775 onward, AM5, Threadripper/EPYC). CPUs usually don't fail unless they've been damaged or pushed too hard.
