Hey everyone, just installed a new CPU (i7 6700k) and MOBO (Asus Z170-A). My cooler is a five-year-old Corsair H60... it seems to be working fine so far until I think about upgrading my case or cooler.
I recently overclocked the CPU to 4.5 GHZ @ 1.3v. I've read various sources suggesting you shouldn't push your CPU beyond 80-85 during stress tests for longevity, but I'm seeing different results depending on the benchmark.
On Prime95 version 26.6, I reached a max of 85, while Realbench only hit around 75. When gaming (not full stress tests), I usually stay between 50-65 tops—like when running TW Warhammer at high settings.
Could it be safer to increase voltage or clockspeed a bit more until I reach 80-85 on Realbench? Or would it be better to stick with what I have since I'm already seeing those temps in Prime95?
Also, my GPU is an EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ Edition (factory overclocked). I haven't seen it exceed 79 degrees at full load. Do you think it's safe to try overclocking it further beyond the factory limits? Thanks for your help—I'll answer all replies soon!

I wouldn't exceed 80c. My i7 3820 is overclocked to 4.625Ghz with an offset voltage, temperatures seem to be about 60-65 (sometimes reaching the 70s) using a 95 model. I also have a h60 with two fans in a push-pull setup. The fan was replaced with Notura fans and better thermal paste.
My r9 390 can reach up to 85c after stress testing, around 70-75 during games. I got it when it was released and never faced any problems. I won't let my GPU hit 90c either. Also, what about your case cooling setup?

I wouldn’t exceed 80c. My i7 3820 is overclocked to 4.625Ghz with an offset voltage, and I believe temperatures are around 60-65 (sometimes reaching the 70s) with a 95 model. I also have a h60 with two fans in a push-pull setup. I swapped the fan with Notura fans and used better thermal paste.
My R9 390 can handle up to 85c after stress testing, usually around 70-75 during gaming. I got it right away and haven’t faced any problems. I won’t let my GPU hit 90c either. Also, could you tell me about your case cooling setup?
Currently I have an Azza Solano... which is fine, I suppose. It has a 120 in front, the 120 for the radiator on the back, a 240 on the side and another 240 on top. (The second fan from the 120 is dead and they’re all connected to the PSU together so sad.) It does a decent job, but when I built this PC I didn’t have as much knowledge as now, which is why I’m planning an upgrade to a much better case later this year when I can afford it.
