they usually pick up the 3-pin connector found on certain laptops, or they sometimes try a basic 2-pole jack that isn't a barrel type—something I've been searching for myself over the last three years, but it doesn’t appear to be widely available.

yeah the jack looks like a barrel jack but then there is another big pin in the middle. not really sure where to find a jack like that.

It's quite an outdated device, and based on what I've seen, the so-called "high power" feature was mostly just a trick. You'd probably achieve longer range, faster speeds, and steadier Wi-Fi with a newer router—even something reasonably affordable—and it wouldn't cost significantly more than swapping out the power supply.
