I'm searching for an APU that matches your new build's needs—strong iGPU, solid CPU, and good performance in games. The 3400G impressed with its gaming speed but falls short in CPU power compared to Intel options. Its iGPUs are weak, which is a concern. I'm wondering if it can still function properly after 8 to 10 years, or if it's better to wait for AMD's upcoming 5000-series CPUs. You mentioned planning a setup with 2x8GB of 3200MHz RAM, an A320M motherboard, and a 660GB SSD powered by a 550W PSU. (I assume "usable after 10 years" means it boots the OS and runs basic apps within a reasonable time.)

Yes, it works well for basic tasks. The 5000 series APUs are expected to launch in early August, and this version includes the 5600g and 5700g models which provide significantly better performance than the 3400g.

You have a 3400g device with a basic gaming APU. The GPU is quite low, and the CPU matches that of a high-end i7 from 2016. What will you use it for? Simple web browsing and office tasks should work just fine for a decade. If it still functions then, you might want to upgrade the components since this A320M board is quite basic and may not last long. Regarding the power supply, you should opt for a high-quality unit—anything average will likely fail soon. For gaming, stick to older browsers like Firefox; it runs smoothly on older systems and won’t lag with updates. Consider using a lighter browser to be prepared for future changes. Remember, predicting performance over ten years is uncertain, but it’s safe to assume it could work if you back up your data, as SSDs often fail over time.

For future upgrades, consider an Intel 10th or 11th generation processor. The i3 11400 offers better performance and durability compared to the 3400G. If you're looking for immediate gaming needs, the iGPU in the 3400G provides stronger support.

The B450 mobos cost around 150 dollars, which is why I assumed the A320m would suffice. Will a standard mobo last at least eight years? Yes, I’d be ready to upgrade now… though not after about eight years. I already know I can’t play on any system older than that. Right now I’m using an old hard drive for my very old PC, so I’ll need to get a new SSD. Thanks for your advice!

I'm preparing funds for a new PC now. If the 5000 series arrives in August, I'd buy it then. If not, should I hold off or can I purchase the 3400G instead?

Suggest using the PC as long as possible, aiming for the 5000 series. They’re nearly here and provide significantly better performance compared to the 3000 series. Keep in mind, the 3400G chip was released in 2019!

The top recommendation is a 5000 series APU, but this implies you can't use a 300 series board since they aren't compatible. You must choose reliable parts for durability, or rely on chance or both.
