Hi there! I recently purchased a used RTX 3080 GPU and ran several benchmarks. It performed adequately, so I kept it. However, I started hearing a very loud coil whine during certain tasks, especially when using Unity. This was first noticed while working in Unity, where the GPU would whine whenever I moved the viewport. After some research, I learned that the GPU's high performance—rendering millions of frames per second—could be causing this issue. Eventually, I found a setting to lock the frame rate to my monitor’s refresh rate, which eliminated the noise. The situation improved significantly.
I’m continuing with my projects. Right now, I’m working on a model in Blender. The scene uses a low-poly model and a 512x512 texture. If I pan or zoom, it starts whining again. The scene isn’t overly demanding, but it’s still puzzling why this happens on such a high-end card. Sorry for the rambling, but this is frustrating. Can I return it? It has a two-year warranty. Also, does my monitor have a 4K display? My 1060 6GB card never experienced something like this before.
The level of quality on the card doesn’t entirely stop coil whine from occurring. You might be able to request a replacement through RMA, but it’s uncertain whether the new card will perform the same way. Some parts under specific conditions cause coil whine, and since nothing is faulty, the manufacturer can’t repair it.
Indirectly, yes. Your GPU is now producing coil whine in a new setting, which isn't the same as before. You can run Ark. WoW or Minecraft with shaders without problems. Playing Pixelmon Minecraft through Technic triggers coil whine. Eventually, you'll come to appreciate it, since engineers designed it this way. Sarcasm aside, they have no motivation to fix it—since you're purchasing the hardware.
