Could the introduction of DDR6 and compatible CPUs alleviate the ongoing shortage of DDR5 AI components?
Likely not in the near future. The real issue isn't chips or modules missing wafers—they're constructed from materials—and excessive use of facilities to produce them. This is combined with manufacturing other chips required for AI data farms. Memory chips used in SSDs are simple and inexpensive to make without big profit margins. AI has created a new market where profits are much higher, driving investments up rapidly, and everyone is vying for a share. More costly components like GPUs and CPUs yield greater returns, making production more profitable. The situation is tightening, and they’re already facing challenges from the AI side. Nvidia has already announced a significant reduction in GPU production this year, which won’t lower their costs. Neither AMD nor Nvidia has released any new flagship consumer products for this year.
