Could not determine the issue leading to the computer freezing.
Hello, I recently switched from a Ryzen 3 1300X to a Ryzen 7 5800X. Since then, my PC has become quite unstable. I can’t run basic tests like User Benchmark smoothly. It often freezes during demanding games such as Rust or FIFA 23. At first, I assumed the overheating was the problem, but after upgrading to an Arctic Freezer 34 Esportsduo, the issue persisted. Someone I know couldn’t identify the cause. While searching for solutions, my SSD became corrupted, which might help pinpoint the problem. I’ve read about failing GPUs but don’t see any clear signs of failure. The freezing usually happens when browsing menus in FIFA 23 or opening packs, about 10-15 minutes into a Rust session. During a User Benchmark, it freezes around the same point—the “Gravity” GPU test. Here’s my latest benchmark link: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/58163272 I’ve tried several fixes: cleaned the drives, reinstalled Windows, used DDU to reset drivers, removed and reinserted RAM, cleaned GPU fans, and even reformatted the SSD. My specs are: motherboard PRIME A320M-K, CPU Ryzen 7 5800X, GTX 1070, 500GB SSD, and a 16GB HDD with 2x8GB RAM on Corsair Vengeance LPX. The PSU is 80+ White.
When the system freezes, I can still detect some sounds for a short time. I can move my mouse for about 20 seconds, but then the whole screen becomes unresponsive. I’m unable to launch or close any programs. The CTRL SHIFT ESC keys don’t function, and neither do CTRL ALT DELETE. I haven’t installed any AMD drivers—just updated the BIOS to let the motherboard communicate with the CPU. I’m wondering which AMD drivers might be needed. Additionally, I can’t modify the PSU or motherboard without replacing them and testing them.
I've updated the AMD drivers, restarted the system, and completed the benchmark. It improved by about 20 frames but still froze. After another run, it stopped at the standard point with a black screen flashing and a visual glitch appearing inside the benchmark window. Colors displayed as pure RGB in thick columns, lasting roughly 2-3 frames before resuming. The benchmark results are attached.
I reviewed CPU-Z and it suggests dual-channel configuration. I observed louder fan noises during GPU testing, with a brief kettle-like sound lasting 3-5 seconds at the end of benchmarks. The other noise appears to be fans reaching maximum RPM while cooling the GPU. Temperatures were checked, and the highest recorded was 67°C.
I've just played 4 more games, and 3 of them stopped working completely. They say it's probably due to graphics drivers. Could the motherboard be the issue, or is the GPU failing?
I experienced the same issue before. It occurred when I didn’t notice my CPU getting too hot for a while. When I checked the temperature, it reached 100°C. My old i3 4th generation was affected. The computer would freeze while running, the mouse moved but then stopped completely. This happened because the CPU was damaged, and it was quite old. You mentioned it might have been overheating before you added a cooler? Did you also replace the thermal paste? If temperatures are normal, it could be the SSD. Based on your GPU age and overclocking level, most GPUs typically fail around 5 years, which might explain why your games crashed or caused BSOD.
It's a 1070 MSI model, originally owned by a friend for around two years. It came in its original packaging and was later sold to me. I believe I've used it for about two years as well. When I noticed the overheating, the CPU temperature peaked at 93°C during a short gaming session. After stopping PC use and taking a break, I returned it with a cooler and only used it afterward. It seems the CPU wasn't damaged. I replaced the thermal paste with a fresh one. The SSD became corrupted, and even after removing it, nothing changed. I'm still struggling with the Gravity GPU test link you provided. I wish there was a way to verify 100% if the GPU is faulty, but I don’t have a spare to test. Maybe it’s time to replace it.
