You have a laptop that runs basic applications like Word and Excel. With only 4GB RAM and a Celeron processor, Linux might not be ideal right now. It could also help extend battery life. Which distribution would suit you best?

I wouldn't understand the reason, but I'd choose Ubuntu or Linux Mint for the desktop.

8.1 seems to be the top choice—it's the most lightweight OS I've tried so far.

Dislikes the W8/8.1 version; would dislike it too.

They're quite heavy for a Celeron, but Lubuntu or Crunchbang would be better choices.

Consider using Ubuntu instead of Unity because it consumes too many graphics resources. I’m planning to run Linux on my laptop and use a VM for Windows when required, especially for certain classes.

I focus on jotting down notes because typing quickly is much faster than writing.

It makes sense if you're starting out with Linux. For beginners, Mint, Elementary or Ubuntu Mate are good options. Theoretically you'll have longer battery life, but sometimes bad drivers can cause issues.
