I've used an i5 4590 with a GTX 1070 setup for a while, and it's been reliable. I'm curious about how much faster frame rates could be in more CPU-intensive games if I upgraded to something like the Ryzen 3300x or similar Intel models such as the 9400 or 10400. I'm not familiar with newer Intel CPUs lately, so I'm unsure about the exact gains. Plus, I plan to switch to DDR4 from the latest Intel chips, which adds another layer of change. Let me know if you have any ideas or advice.
i upgraded a i7 4770 to an 3600 and saw a 40 fps increase in bdo on lowest settings. but you might want to wait for ryzen 4000
wait for zen 3 and see what it brings. don't grab coffee lake, I wouldn't suggest it. go with zen 2/3 or comet lake instead.
We’re pretty similar in specs. Mine had a 4670k with a slower GPU, GTX 1060, but I upgraded to a 4670k at 4.5GHz. Switching to an R5 3500 didn’t change my average FPS much—likely due to the weaker GPU. The biggest gains are in multitasking; for example, I can run AC Origins with a second monitor open while playing. If you’re into games, try Zen 2 or wait for Zen 3 i5 10400F. It’s probably already matched with your BIOS, and your RAM is limited to 2666MHz because of the motherboard.
The key to deciding whether to upgrade is your satisfaction with current performance. If you're comfortable with the FPS you're receiving now, no upgrade is necessary. For better performance, proceed with an upgrade. However, wait until the Ryzen 4000 is released before purchasing, as they should be available by year-end.
The difference between the i5 4590 and R3 3300X isn't huge. You'll notice it, but it probably isn't worth a few hundred dollars. For comparable prices, a 9600KF would be better. It's quicker but uses less power than the 3300X. I'd prefer the R5 3600 if I'm aiming for that budget. Alternatively, you could wait for the 4000 series if it's not urgent. Delays are possible, especially with COVID, so consider next-gen only when necessary. Also, keep in mind that when the AMD 4000 comes out, it'll be just a few months after Intel's 11th gen with 10nm, and the AMD 5000 will follow shortly after.
