Could fiber internet improve your situation?
This has been about the misleading ads for VDSL compared to fiber, which sets the performance ceiling based on your connection's capabilities. True fiber is mainly constrained by the devices at both ends and promises long-term growth.
Your previous ADSL connection was over provisioned. If the speed were cut in half packet loss would be improved and likely latency. I've had 6mb ADSL business connections have better latency than high speed cable. You need to use the router / modem they suggest. 99% of the time they do this because they dont want to support 3rd party gear they arent familiar with. Don't blame them. In some more remote areas they just run fiber vs coax because there's no legacy coax infrastructure to extend off of. With a low volume of endpoints it just makes more sense to string glass and under provision it and be future proof vs save a little money and run coax.
there isn't any cable coax available in my country, and when they are, they're only for satellite TVs—not internet. None of the ISPs offer routers or suggest ones, so you have to purchase them yourself. This is done to cut costs given the current economic situation.
I repeatedly attempted to configure QoS on my outdated ADSL modem, but it failed and the process proved overly complex. I’m hoping things will improve soon, possibly permanently.
