Can a core 2 quad processor fit into an asus P5LD2-VM motherboard if it isn't? The socket size being similar doesn't necessarily prevent compatibility.

The Core 2 Quad CPU won't function on this motherboard since it doesn't match the 945G chipset compatibility. The CPU needs a G33 chipset instead.

Meographer,
Is it possible to link a core 2 quad processor to an ASUS P5LD2-VM motherboard when the socket dimensions are nearly identical? I’m trying to understand why the size remains similar.

According to my research, here’s what I found:
The ASUS P5LD2-VM uses LGA775 with a chipset like 945G, supporting processors such as Pentium, Pentium D, and Core 2 Duo. Based on the FSB and chipset details, compatible options are listed at Intel’s site. The recommended CPU seems to be the Core 2 Duo E6700, offering two cores at 2.66GHz.

I own a Dell Dimension E520 with a Core2 Duo E6700 (2-core @ 2.66GHz), originally running a Pentium D 830. With good graphics cards and HDs, these setups can handle work tasks well, though gaming might not be ideal due to the CPU speeds and slow DDR2 RAM.

In my opinion, it would be more efficient to upgrade to a modern LGA1155 or 1150 socket and use an i3, i5, or i7 processor. You could also consider used models like a Dell Optiplex 960 i5 at 3.0GHz for under $150, or a QX6800 CPU for around $120. A Dell Optiplex 980 with an i5-6600 at 3.33GHz is another option, priced around $129. Be mindful that these systems require compact GPUs and may run hot.

For better performance and future-proofing, switching to a newer socket and a more recent processor would be preferable.

It's worth noting that after applying the newest BIOS updates, both my P5LD2-VM and P5L-MX are successfully operating with X8600 chips at around 3Ghz (2.93).
