I bought a 24-port SFP switch from 3com off ebay, but I suspect the RJ-45 Ethernet ports are turned off by default. To activate them, I’d need to remotely access the device, which requires connecting a computer. I don’t have any SFP cables or network cards available. Would it be possible to use an adapter with a regular Ethernet NIC instead?

Yup, that should work just fine.

Really! That's great news—I was worried I'd have to spend around $60 on SFP equipment just to get the switch going. Thanks!

Those are also SFPs, just with a copper finish at the end rather than fiber. Luckily they are available, and without them my day would be terrible sometimes x.x

Another point, the device I own is a 3Com 4800G 24-port SFP with a console port. I need a console cable because I discovered that telnet must be started via the console port. Some RJ-45 cables marketed as converting to RS-232 are brand-specific, often promoted for Cisco devices. Do you know if any of these will still fit my 3Com switch? Thanks ahead.

I'm not entirely confident about this, but they should be able to help. Use a console cable, connect it to a USB adapter, and you should be fine. The exact baud rate isn't clear, but it's likely around 9600.

I located the baud rate and other details in the switch’s manual, but nothing about the cable type—likely because it came with the device originally. I’ll purchase a Cisco model from Amazon and return it if it doesn’t function. Some research suggests they’re compatible with standard consoles, though I’ll need to confirm. Thanks for your assistance!
