I was considering purchasing a HOTAS after the racing module launched. For dog fighting, the KB+M performed well since precision mattered more than agility, but when racing I craved tighter control and found the Xbox controller lacking. I initially looked at the x55, but opted for a joystick first to test the waters. Once the SC HOTAS arrived (still a year away), I planned to upgrade to it, though I worried about the price tag before selling the x55, which seemed likely to lose value. Eventually, I chose the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro—it was affordable yet functional. I jumped into racing and confirmed it was a solid pick. Later, when testing in dog fighting mode with Swarm, performance suffered due to the lack of gimbaling, making aiming difficult. After some trial and error, I switched to using my mouse for better control, which improved accuracy. For future reference, I’m curious if others use this configuration and whether a comfortable left-handed joystick exists. The Logitech works fine, but the grip can become uncomfortable over time because the thumb rest protrudes into my palm.

I wasn’t sure it would function this way, but I’m willing to give it a shot! At the moment I’m using KB+M and my abilities are getting better, though completing Vanduul Swarm feels impossible without facing those massive waves.

Well first off, the SC HOTAS could be a reskinned X55. I’m based on what I’ve seen at CIG. It’s not confirmed, but I went ahead and bought the X55 because I prefer the throttle over the 'hogs. The Hog’s joystick seems better, though I’m still okay with joystick control in dogfights and racing—it might not bother me, but it’s a good idea. Your setup looks interesting; I’m fine with that, and it actually works. I also found this link: http://www.giantbomb.com/steel-battalion...16/images/

I also used the stick + mouse method before, which works well. The main issue is that there isn’t a third hand for controlling the ship’s functions on the keyboard.

The x55 certainly appears as a solid piece of equipment with a reasonable cost, much like a warthog would appreciate its value—though as an engineer, the build quality does add an extra appeal. I’m hoping they’ll invest more time to customize it if needed; otherwise, it might stay fairly standard since each control package varies. Some dedicated power and shield buttons would be welcome, though I wouldn’t be surprised if a reworked version emerges. Ultimately, I’d still prefer a proper HOTAS setup but could pair it with accessories like a TrackIR or Rift for improved gimbaling. My left hand was quite restless during the initial testing—looking more like a sci-fi character than a real user—and everyone seemed to be juggling switches and buttons with a bit of creative rebinding. I think most core functions could fit onto my mouse (G700s), but a customizable stick would make it easier for me, especially if it’s left-handed or ambidextrous.

The quality of the Warthog comes from the joystick, not the throttle, many reviews mention this. It’s worth watching a YouTube review, especially one with other HOTAS included. The Hog’s high price stems partly from it being a replica of the real thing, adding extra cost. I’d love to see the original Hog joystick paired with the X55 throttle. The X55 feels comfortable in hand; just a minor reach problem on the red button tops it. One of the smaller joysticks is awkward, but it doesn’t matter since nothing critical is attached. I might upgrade the joystick or switch to something else—maybe an Xbox or PS model. Ideally, CIG would release a new version instead of just reworking it. If they did that, I’d be thrilled. I hope they offer 2–4 different setups: a cheap option, a top-tier HOTAS combo with pedals, and a full flight setup with wireless or VR options priced around $500–$800. All included!

The top control method remains joystick plus mouse. Will this change? Unknown. Using joystick/throttle with IR head tracking works well, though it isn't as precise as using a mouse to operate a gimbal.

PS3 controller is still working for me. The right stick handles gimballing, and I'm eager until they fix the deadzones. Voice commands aren't reliable for issuing commands on the pad. The interface improvements are helpful—I can memorize shield combinations and act faster than using voice. Still planning to use the stick and mouse.
