2960's are very affordable right now, but a 3550 L3 model is quite costly. For a lab, you might want to consider a router instead.

Huh? They're about the same price. 2960 with no letter and 3550. You can typically find them each for $25-$40. The 2811 is a pretty good practice router, as is the 1841. I'd recommend multiple. Also you can virtualize / simulate this stuff with packet tracer, GNS3, and VIRL. Edit: oh, you're in the U.K. Idk pricing there.

I attended networking in college which provided a solid understanding of theory and subnetting. A net+ book could serve as a good starting point for learning the basics. Right now, I’m watching a Udemy video series on CCNA bootcamp by Chris Bryant – it will give you more hands-on experience if you aim to become a network engineer or admin. I haven’t taken the exam yet, but so far I’m finding it enjoyable.

Absolutely, I work a lot with hardware, so I’m open to using it. Plus, my desk would look great with some hardware around!

For CCENT and CCNA the actual hardware isn't essential. Focus on using tools like Packet Tracer or similar platforms, and you'll succeed.
