I'm part of the team managing a small local company that's building up its stock of processors without packaging. We're looking for CPU trays—do you know if these are widely available or designed for specific generations and sockets?

CPU dimensions vary widely. Intel’s popular processors have used the 115x socket for nearly a decade, maintaining a consistent size. Meanwhile, Intel offers HEDT and server sockets that accommodate significantly bigger chips. AMD also provides mainstream models with similar dimensions, but they feature larger variants like Threadripper. On many AMD chips, you’ll encounter PGA connectors, which require careful handling of the pins. These differences exist across sockets and generations, though each path has its own characteristics.

We mainly work with seniors and younger individuals seeking custom builds. Most of our processors are consumer-grade, though I own about four Xeons as well.

Ensuring a stable anti-static setting is important for these items. For PGA CPUs, it’s usually best to store them inside the protective plastic casing provided with the package, if feasible. Otherwise, shallow drawers from IKEA could be a viable option. A CPU tray sold on Chinese sites might also suit, though availability is limited to Intel models in my experience.
