Consoles for playing games on Steam
Hey there! It sounds like you're exploring a unique idea—building a Windows-based gaming console with Steam integration. As for the market, it depends on how you position it. If you focus on niche audiences or specific gaming needs, there might be an opportunity. Otherwise, competition from established platforms could be strong. Consider what makes your version different and how you can stand out!
This approach has already been attempted and didn't work. Offering a "steam console" doesn't really add value since you can easily create or purchase a standalone PC, install Windows, and enable Steam Auto Start as a DIY solution.
Those who solely enjoy playing on consoles will purchase a console without considering other alternatives.
They’ve taken care of everything for you. You can simply purchase them through the Steam platform.
They use steamOS based on Linux, which means many games aren't available there.
They possess the software yet they entered agreements with hardware firms too soon. For a relaxed experience with an Xbox or Steam controller, big picture mode is perfect! However, it’s hard to claim simply “sell some computers and call them consoles.” It was a solid effort but the software remains freely available for those interested. I personally enjoyed playing Space Marine, Shadow of Mordor, and Rise of the Tomb Raider with my Xbox controller. I’d be excited to try Metro Redux or Metro Exodus in 4K while lounging on the couch. Edit: we might be on the edge of a GPU market crash that could boost some impressive SLI configurations when GPUs struggle with hashing, or the crypto market drops in about eight years. I can wait.
