Hey everyone. I understand the situation with the hardware supply and high costs, but I’m looking for guidance on whether to proceed with this project.

I previously had an i9-12900K at a discounted price last year. After hearing about the 13th and 14th generation chips, I decided against it, opting for the 12900. Now I’m working on a z790 build. I found a high-end proart board from Asus, though it’s pricey, but I can manage it with a monthly payment plan.

I also know that z790 is no longer supported, and my main upgrade path will be to the 13th/14th generation. Intel has released the Core Ultra lineup recently, so my build would focus on gaming and heavy workloads.

My main concern is whether downgrading to a lower-end CPU like the 12900K or switching to another processor like AMD makes more sense. I feel uncertain about whether upgrading further will really improve performance, but I’m worried about making a mistake. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, just to note, I currently have an i9-7900X with an X299 build.

I found a great proart board from Asus, expensive, but I can buy it on a pay by month deal.
How much were you offered?
do I ditch the 12900K (sell it) and go for the core ultra or even AMD or go forward with the build?
AM5 will warrant DDR5 ram and the sweet spot for that platform(not to mention Intel's) is DDR5-6000MHz or DDR5-6000MT/s speeds with tight latencies. How much did you buy the i9-12900K anyway?
Also for the record, I currently have an i9-7900X, X299 build.
Please list the specs to your current build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.
Anyway, what's the best direction folks, I need some advice.
What apps do you use for editing? Speaking of editing, is it video editing or photo editing? Does this editing pay for itself? If so, then you can recoup your investments made...over time with concurrent hardware as they would be faster at accomplishing your tasks.
Lastly, where are you located? How much do you have set aside for a build? Preferred site for purchase?
