Considering the best time to purchase an RTX 5080, thought?
I've been watching the price drop of the RTX 5080 since February, and it's been going down steadily. Here are some recent prices from Amazon. Then I came across an article about tariffs, which made me pause. Link here. I'm not in a hurry to buy, but I might be ready by the end of 2025. The cheapest I've seen so far is around $1350, and I'd like to get it under $1100. What do you think will happen with GPU prices? Am I worried they'll keep falling or jump again? I'm thinking about buying now to close the gap I'm aiming for—about $250 right now (between $1350 and $1100). Any thoughts?
Have you thought about the 5070 Ti? It isn’t much slower and is priced at $900. Still, Microcenter offers cards for $1200 if you can manage to travel under $150, and perhaps grab some additional items that could be worthwhile. Until the tariff situation settles, I’d suggest purchasing now or holding off until the next generation.
I’ve picked up a bit about GPUs lately, especially if you can afford one. You never know when you might need it again.
I understand if you want it purchased, since no one can foresee future prices.
Dude, the GTX 1070 8 GB video card needs an upgrade... How to get it past the wife/girlfriend...
I faced the same choice recently. The week before, the nearby Micro Center restocked 25 PNY 5080's at $1,100 (non-RGB), selling out quickly. The next best deal was an RGB model for $200 more. They carry some Asus and Gigabyte, but they’re quite expensive.
Due to ongoing tariff uncertainties, I visited the Micro Center today and bought the PNY RGB version. My latest RTX is PNY and it’s performing well.
As others mentioned, given the current situation, things are as they are.
What are your PC specifications? If your computer is as outdated as the GPU, you might want to consider reallocating your budget for a new build.
Need... it's a video game feature, so I wouldn't say it's essential. If I really needed it, I'd buy it right away. It's just a nice luxury item for entertainment. I'm trying to weigh the time investment over the next six months to a year against purchasing a toy.
Sure, no one can foresee future prices, that's obvious, but I'm curious about people's views on tariffs and how high-end GPU manufacturers have changed over time (I don't remember the details well, but others might have insights)...
The PC is around a year old, featuring solid parts, but it relies on a budget "bridge" GPU—a loaner from a friend or an RTX 3070—as a temporary solution until I can acquire an RTX 5080. This would complete a fairly decent and up-to-date PC upgrade that I’d really be pleased with.
