Hrm, I’m checking my i5 8600 OC at 4.7 ghz. That’s why I suspect it might be the CPU. I’ve noticed some issues with certain games, like AC and Doom Eternal. I also have a multi-monitor setup—three monitors, including one at 1440p for gaming. Could that be contributing to the problems?

When FPS drops occur, it’s usually due to browser activity or background processes. Reducing video quality and closing unused windows helps. Even on my machine, Doom Eternal can experience dips around 60-70 FPS at 1440p, especially during intense scenes like frame locking at 100fps because of jitter between 60 and 144Hz. Overall, it seems the GPU might be the main concern.

It seems like the issue is mainly related to the GPU. It would assist with multitasking, though the displays won't be impacted by activity levels. If you frequently switch tasks, upgrading might be beneficial, but be sure to dispose of the old CPU.
With chrome browser playing video, it's either using the CPU to run the video (hardware acceleration off), or the GPU to run the video (hardware acceleration on). In gaming scenarios, neither is really a good thing. I tend to watch a lot of youtube while I play games, and I set my side videos to 480p. The ASUS Z370-A is a mid-range motherboard with mid-range VRM. It's pretty similar to what I'm using on my 8700k, and at 1.38v and 5ghz for the past two years it's handled it quite well. That said, I can't vouch for how well it would power a 9700k or a 9900k. Stock would probably be fine, but overclocking might be a bit out of reach. If you want to be sure, you'll want to spend at least $180 on a new motherboard that we know will work well with it. 2. Either way, you will have to buy a much much beefier cooler. For a 9700k/9900k, you'll want at least something as strong as a high end tower like a Noctua NH-D15 or a 240/280mm AIO. Either is going to set you back between $90-180. 3. On to your CPU. The 9700k is around $375, and the 9900k is around $510. Add that all up, and you have a. Motherboard, cooler, CPU cost of $180 + $100 + $375/ $510 = $655 / $790. Assuming you can sell off the 8600k/mobo for around $275, your net cost is $380/$515. b. Hope the motherboard works, sell your CPU for $200, and then buy a $100 cooler and a $375 / $510 cpu for net cost of $275 / $410 or c. Get a 3700x for $290, a ASUS TUF X570 Gaming for $180 = $470, sell your 8600k and motherboard for $275, and net cost of $195. You will lose a small amount of absolute single threaded performance and ringbus latency advantages (all of which pretty much go away at 1440p) from going to the Ryzen, but gain simultaneous multi-threading which gets you more efficiency. Scenario a. cost you out of pocket $380 (for a feature-inferior part) / $515, and scenario c. costs you $195 out of pocket. Scenario b. is iffy based on if it will work well enough, but you'll need to consider even then, it will net cost you $275 (for a feature-inferior part) / $410 vs $195 out of pocket. I personally cannot recommend the 9700k because its a defective part that lacks standard efficiency features. So all of the things above really make me arrive at, "don't bother." You can spend anywhere between $195 for a sidegrade to $515 for a minor upgrade.....or deal with it for 6 months and buy a Ryzen 4000, which is more than likely to be better than everything presently available and make your upgrade worthwhile.
