Hi, I'm new to the CSGO competitive world and realize my setup is quite outdated. Here are my current specs:
Asus z390 ATX
Intel I5-4460 at 3.2GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 TI
Acer monitor at 144 Hz (budget option)
decent peripherals, only a mouse upgrade needed
I'm considering upgrading both CPU and GPU to improve my chances. What options do I have?

If it's a standard 80+ like a W1 then the power supply is really poor. Upgrading your GPU would probably be the best choice too. It gets tough to decide whether to replace the CPU, which would keep graphics performance similar but require a new motherboard and RAM (potentially costing around $500), or switch to a new GPU, which might mean upgrading the PSU as well—especially if you prefer a dedicated system over a generic low-end EVGA power supply.

The chipset doesn't match the 4th generation Intel requirements. Could you confirm if it's not a Z97 model? What is your budget? The CPU upgrade will also need updates for MB and RAM. Also, could you share the PSU make and model details?

Motherboard: correct! It's a Z-87A
Budget: $500 cdn (you can go higher if needed, but $500 is a solid amount)
PSU: EVGA 500W 80+

If it's a standard 80+ like a W1 then the power supply is really bad. Upgrading your graphics card would probably be the next step, but it gets complicated. You’d have to replace the CPU, which would keep most of the visual performance the same, and also get a new motherboard, RAM, and possibly a $500 upgrade for the PSU (unless you’re okay with a basic EVGA power supply).
What are you aiming for with these changes?
