Considering a graphics card upgrade while worried about performance limits from your CPU
Hi everyone, I'm trying to improve my PC to run most AAA games smoothly at 1080p with around 60 frames per second. Currently I have an i5-6400 2.7GHz, a GTX 960 2GB, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. I was thinking of swapping the GTX 960 for a 1660S, but worried it might not match my CPU's capabilities. My budget is about 300€, so I need to decide if this setup will work for a few years or if I should look for a better upgrade later. Any suggestions or alternatives would be appreciated. Thanks!
The system is constrained by the 6400's design—it uses fewer threads and may limit performance in games that support up to four threads. This could slow things down slightly. You might consider switching to a 7700/6700/k for a better upgrade path without altering the platform. We can't confirm or suggest otherwise.
It should work fine in most games these days, though some might have issues. You can always boost your CPU later when needed—no major problem. The 1660S will run smoothly at 1080p for several years if you adjust the settings gradually, saving money by upgrading components one by one.
