It's a tricky question. On my Intel setup I've never faced problems with XMP, but on my AMD it causes the system to fail to power on. I have to adjust the settings myself because the supported speeds aren't as high as what the RAM claims. In short, you're unlikely to damage your machine by turning XMP on. The main concerns are booting issues or longer startup times until the motherboard recognizes the new speeds. Overall, it's safe to enable unless your system is heavily loaded. Whether it's worth it depends on your needs—performance gains matter if you're using a powerful rig, but for basic tasks it's probably fine to skip it. Just remember, turning XMP off will void the warranty.
I don’t need to stress too much about this. Just a reminder if you ever have to bring the CPU in for an RMA or warranty claim. If they ask whether you used XMP, simply say no... They probably won’t be able to tell otherwise. Also, I can easily remember how many real bad CPUs I’ve had before. In fact, most other system parts tend to fail first unless you push things too hard.
Gamers' Nexus conducted their own "covert" check on this topic regarding X.M.P. and Intel's warranty. They reached out to Intel's Customer Support multiple times, speaking with various representatives about a failing CPU and the use of X.M.P. It turned out Intel would still replace or issue a warranty for the CPU. I had to submit an RMA for my $500 i7-6800K earlier this year, but the process ended up being a full refund. When asked whether X.M.P. was active, I chose the truthful option and confirmed it was enabled. They informed me that copying or pasting X.M.P. would void the warranty, but they still went ahead with the acceptance.
It's the first time I've switched to AUTO mode. I haven't noticed a big impact on performance with my Ryzen setup. Current clock speed is 2400MHz.
You're using a first-generation Ryzen processor, which is known for its memory compatibility challenges. (The lower the clock speeds, the more issues you encounter.) The problem was mostly resolved in the second generation, and fully fixed with the newer 3000 series models.
I’d rather not focus on getting my RAM up to X speed. My goal was to show that XMP isn’t always effective. For my HTPC, which gets used mostly when turned off after switching to an Nvidia Shield, I wouldn’t invest in Zen 2 just to enable DOCP. That would be unrealistic. Perhaps later I might look at repurposing the system if needed.
