Planning my new PC build for next month after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I’m switching from Windows 7 Professional to something newer. Some say it boosts performance but might complicate app compatibility. What do others think? And should I go with OEM or buy from a retailer?

It would be better to wait until you have 10, as you already possess 7. Your performance improves more on budget models than high-end ones.

Windows 8/8.1 works just fine; you don’t need to worry about all the metro apps if you use something like Classicstart. You can download it from Ninite or their official site here. http://www.classicshell.net/ Also, it doesn’t really matter which version you choose, but I’d recommend going with OEM.

It will be released soon, similar to Windows 8. It won’t go back to the standard Windows version.

The launch timeline isn't finalized yet. The developer preview suggests a blend of Windows 7 and 8.1 features.

It mainly blends features from versions 7 and 8, likely resulting in a Windows 7 desktop experience if it recognizes a keyboard and mouse, or a Windows 8 metro version with touchscreen support. Probably an upgrade over both previous versions, which is exciting. Personally, I prefer sticking with your existing 7 and saving money for better hardware or future upgrades.

They say it will be a major jump from version 8, since 8 is merely a stylish 7, and Windows 10 is just another upgraded 8. We gave too much credit to Microsoft for Windows 7, and they don't understand what comes next.

I believe I might consider using Windows 8.1. I won't wait until mid-2015 for Windows 10 (though it seems promising based on some reviews). I can purchase Windows 8.1 for $50 with a discount I have. That's quite reasonable compared to the $150 for Windows 7...

Do you still have your current computer? I wasn't sure why I thought you were ending it, but if you can't use your serial from the present machine and need to purchase an operating system, that seems like a solid choice. Win7 probably isn't worth the additional $100.

I was unsure at first, but now I’m really satisfied. It only requires a small tweak. Install classic shell or start8 to get started.
