I usually remove many system components, my laptop has 8GB installed and it typically uses 2-3GB. Running a live Ubuntu version showed about 800MB usage while the OS was running, and it felt smoother with programs but not games. Probably wouldn’t stick around if I didn’t play games.

I typically stay close to 1.5GB when the system starts fresh, without tweaking any settings beyond the essentials. I’m not sure if simplifying things really makes a difference.
