I’m decent at figuring out what upgrades are needed in my rig beyond the CPU (I’m pretty clueless about that), but this seems pretty straightforward. I’m using an Intel i5 6500 without overclocking and was thinking about switching to a Ryzen 5 3600 because it felt like a good time. My main focus is gaming with an MSI 1070 8GB graphics card. Would this upgrade make sense for me? Thanks!

3600 seems to be the top option available, offering a reasonable improvement over the 6500.

You're using a 6600k with your 1070, and even at high overclock settings, it's still limited by the CPU. Going up to 3600 should be a solid step from the 6500.
