I own an old i7 920 with 4GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and an R9 280x graphics card (3GB version). I plan to edit videos in DaVinci Resolve since I enjoy the software and it’s free. It’s really slow—sometimes I can’t even add a video to the timeline without two "not responding" errors. I recently discovered a Xeon X5675 6-core processor at 3.06 GHz for $50 (about 240 Romanian leu), which fits on my motherboard. Should I upgrade it with another 8GB of RAM? I want to work with 720p or 1080p and keep things simple. Sorry for the awkward English—I’m not fluent yet.

The issues with the program not starting are probably because your system lacks enough RAM. 4GB is far too little for Davinci Resolve. 16GB would be ideal, though you might notice significant gains by moving to 8GB. The X5675 could be a great upgrade, but increasing RAM should come first.

Consider purchasing two 4 GB sticks, totaling 12 GB, if your motherboard can handle three channels.

It seems the system runs slowly due to lack of AVX support, which is outdated. Check your RAM usage to determine if you're reaching capacity.
