Consider whether enhancing your current setup (AM4) is worth transitioning to the 13th generation.
Hi! Over the past five years I've been using a 2700X + Vega 56 + 16 GB 3200Mhz system, and I'm thinking about an upgrade.
I mainly play competitive games in 1080p at 144Hz on a 144Hz monitor, but I might switch to a 1440p display later (not yet), and I also casually enjoy some AAA titles like RDR2 at high settings—though I don’t max them out.
The thing is, since my motherboard is an AM4 Gen, I could upgrade some components... but is it worth it? Here’s what I’m considering:
Upgrade costs around $1752
CPU: 5800X3D (needs to flash the BIOS for my x470 motherboard) [~$545]
GPU: RTX 4070 [~$1027]
PSU: 750W Plus Gold (currently 650W Plus Bronze)
Cooler: AK620 (I already have the stock Wraith Prism air cooler)
New PC costs about $2165
CPU: i5 13600KF [~$406]
GPU: RTX 4070 [~$1027]
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 UD AC [~$349]
RAM: 32 GB DDR5 5600Mhz [~$100]
PSU: 750W Plus Gold (650W Plus Bronze)
Cooler: AK620 (stock Wraith Prism air cooler)
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow
The difference between these options is about $413.
Looking at my country’s secondary market, I think I could sell my current setup for at least that much.
To me, it makes sense to go with the new PC: for a similar price, I’d be on a “new gen” (though it’ll feel outdated soon after the 14th-gen release). It offers more future-proofing with DDR5 and some leaks suggest LGA1700 can still support 14th-gen.
According to some CPU benchmarks, there isn’t a big performance gap between the two builds. I’m comfortable for the next 3–4 years at 1080p and possibly 1440p.
What are your thoughts? Am I missing something?
Intel usually only backs a socket for a few generations, and the 14th gen chips are essentially just 13th gen 2, a big change. AMD said they’d support AM5 at least until 2025, which should be a much better setup than what they had with AM4. Still, considering the age of the system, if you can, opt for something more recent.
Isn't it a suitable AM5 option for the i5 13600k, around 7600x to 7700x according to certain tests? What are your thoughts? Should you consider an AM5 processor from the 13th generation?
It relies on the intended lifespan of the device and whether you need a path for upgrading components like the CPU.
the 5800X3D wont be outdated for 3 more years. I would say go for option 1.
which 750W psu are you considering? try to get tier A from this list:

I would suggest the 7800XT for 2k gaming. the 12gb Vram will be a limitation in a year or 2. with FSR 3 coming up, i see no reason to go for the 4070 unless ray tracing is everything for you.
