I’m new to Witcher III but just started exploring the game. I’ve defeated a griffin! ;p Right now, I’m just starting to learn how to use my ability points. What should I do with them?

It's really about choosing your path. I went all-in on the pure igni/magic style, using an igni+roll in almost every fight.

It varies based on your approach, but don’t stress—some NPCs will offer you a drink that restores your ability points. My style leans toward light armor, which boosts quick stamina recovery and provides a quench to reduce or block damage. Pair it with dodging, focus on fast attacks, and use quen for extra damage. Skill points should prioritize speed, quen effectiveness, and bonus damage on light armor gear.

Feel free to do whatever you wish. Later in the game, you can also purchase a potion to reset your points and re-spec if needed. Previous titles in the series behaved differently, so they wouldn't have been useful for making your choice.

I checked the guide I looked at yesterday: http://www.gamerevolution.com/features/b...tips-guide. Mostly I’m replacing signs, especially the AXII one, because upgrading it opens extra dialogue choices you wouldn’t have otherwise.

It really doesn't matter much how you start in the game because of the Potion of Clearance. I suggest concentrating on the essentials, especially abilities that boost your blocking skills. Once you reach around level 25, you should understand your playstyle and use a Potion of Clearance to reset things and customize your abilities to fit your goals.
