You're considering a gradual upgrade path starting with your current i77700k and 2070 super. It seems like you're weighing options between the R7 7800X3D, i9 13900, and i9 14900. The R7 is praised for gaming performance and compatibility with older GPUs like the 4090, while the i9 series is generally seen as the top choice for overall performance. If you're aiming for maximum FPS and don’t mind spending more, the i9 models are likely the best bet. However, if you want a balance between cost and future-proofing, the R7 could be a solid middle ground. Consider your budget and how much you value each factor before making a decision.

7800X3D is the current choice, marking the beginning of the AM5 lineup. Intel’s 14th series appears to be the final generation supported by its socket, meaning upgrading past that would require a new motherboard. If future models like the 8800X3D or 9800X3D arrive in two generations, they should still run on AM5 7800X3D. It offers better performance in most games, lower power consumption, simpler cooling needs, and a lower price—about three-quarters of similar Intel CPUs. For productivity tasks beyond gaming, consider sticking with Intel.

Thanks for the info. I’m mainly into gaming and just use this machine for games. I heard the i9 needs a lot of cooling. I might consider the Ryzen if I want something different, but I’d stick with the i9 if it really improves performance. Does the 7800 X3D need a cooler as effective as the i9?

It consumes roughly one-third of the power. I'm using an air cooler on my machine with a less-than-ideal configuration. Even when running Cyberpunk at maximum settings with about 120fps, I only reach around 55 to 60°C. Idle temps sit near 38°C, and during stress tests with both the CPU and GPU running simultaneously for more than ten minutes, it peaked at 78°C.

Great choice! I appreciate your thought process. It's smart to double-check reviews before jumping in. Let me know how it goes!
