In your home setup, the router sits upstairs with an Ethernet cable leading down to your room. You have several devices that could use Ethernet, but you're concerned about too many USB ports and signal interference. You're considering options like a single Ethernet port on the router, connecting it to a switch, then linking desktops, laptops, or even a Pi-Hole/server.

Should you purchase a 5-port switch and fill all slots, or opt for an 8-port model with future expansion? Also, do you prefer a managed or unmanaged switch? The 5-port managed switch comes with a 3-year warranty, while the 8-port managed option offers more flexibility and includes a 3-year warranty as well. Both are solid choices depending on your needs and budget.

I have this and it performs excellently. Always grab the 8-port option—you never know when you might need it, particularly with prices so comparable. TP-LINK

The distinction lies in their characteristics. This one differs from the others in its unique features while sharing similarities with the others.

The items you mentioned are handled switches. They offer additional capabilities such as VLANs and similar features. If you don’t require those extra functions, a standard switch would suffice.

I don’t need one, though I heard the GUI was decent and I’d like to try it. But if I end up in this IT role, I’ll have plenty of experience with them. Sounds good! An 8-port unmanaged switch that’s reliable is a solid choice! Thanks everyone for the tips.

I suggest using a Ubiquity switch—it's excellent and perfect for your home network.

The $200 option versus the $30 alternative is a significant choice. For those without a managed switch, it's unnecessary and costly.
