I own an MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI with a 4080 and a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro. I also have three smaller 1TB NVMe drives running Gen4. I just bought a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro and am wondering if adding it would overload the PCI lanes or cause noticeable slowdowns on the 4080. If it could, I’d be fine removing one of the smaller drives. For reference, the 4080 uses PCIe 4.0 x4, while the 990 Pro is PCIe 3.0 x4. I’m also curious about general advice for deciding which drives to keep or swap.

Your motherboard can handle multiple NVMe SSDs, yet you wondered why it might affect your RTX 4080. I assembled a system with three 8TB NVMe Gen 4 drives and a 3090 Ti, and it performed exceptionally well. Even though all the SSDs were identical in brand and size, results may differ slightly, but noticeable impact seems unlikely.
