Hey everyone, I'm planning to build a home server using my existing hardware. I want it to act as a NAS for local storage and run Docker containers like Nextcloud and GitLab Runner. I also need a Ubuntu-based system for basic tasks such as Excel and web browsing. I have an old PC with Z170 MB RAM, an i7 6700K processor, 3000MHz RAM, a 256GB NVMe SSD, and a 2TB HDD. For the NAS side, I'm thinking of adding more HDDs. What OS and software setup would work best for this configuration?

I’d consider using Proxmox as your hypervisor and then set up virtual machines on top of it. I currently run Proxmox with Truenas, several Ubuntu virtual machines (including one for Docker containers), Home Assistant, and Windows all active. There are many YouTube tutorials demonstrating this setup.

Choose Ubuntu installation with Docker or snaps, and run Samba directly on the host.
