the specifications listed are for the ASUS Crosshair 7 Hero X470 with a Ryzen 3900X, 4x8GB RAM, 3733MHz DDR4, 1000W PSU, Sapphire RGB 1TB SSD, and a Master AIO cooler. The monitor is 1080p and was purchased for $50. You're considering whether to keep the current CPU for more years or switch to an AM5 processor, keeping in mind your disability situation makes saving for a new platform challenging.

It's tough to judge without knowing what you do with your PC or why you think upgrading is necessary, especially if you're on disability pensions. The 3900x still works just fine, so spending money there doesn't seem like a good use of funds. You might consider used options and sell the old one—likely a sensible approach.

I don't perform tasks needing a CPU faster than a 3900X. It's quite powerful, but running at 1080p60 is unlikely to offer any gaming benefits.

you might think the 5000 series is better because it seems to boost performance, like a faster cpu making your game runs smoother and with higher frames per second.

The $50 monitor is likely a 60Hz model. A Ryzen 2000 series processor can easily exceed 60 FPS at 1080P in most games, so upgrading the CPU won't improve performance.

From my playthrough of the 3950X in various titles, particularly when compared to what was advertised, opting for a 5000-series model seems like a solid decision. I’d likely choose the 5800X or 5950X myself. My goal was to eliminate cross-CCD latency entirely, and the 5950X offers flexibility to turn off the CCD if you need peak performance. It’s not just about achieving the highest FPS; I’ve also observed that Intel hardware consistently delivers faster frame times than my 3950X, even after applying various tweaks and modifications (like disabling SMT, using a single CCD, or boosting RAM to 3600 CL18 with fabric sync).

I really believe 3900X still offers solid performance (I have a 5900X, which is 12C/24T, that’s often unnecessary). It looks like AM5 might not be worth the effort either, since many users see it running around 80-85°C. It seems the cooling system isn’t connecting well with the CPU lid, and there aren’t many options to fix that. Overall, you probably won’t notice a big jump in speed compared to a 3900X in everyday situations.

Consider swapping in a display that matches the capabilities of your current system.

What kind of screen do you need with a display port that doesn’t cost too much?
