I recently posted my old desktop a few months ago. Thinking it was no longer functional, I sold the i5 and RX 480 components inside. Yesterday, it started running again, and I noticed an A8-5500 chip installed. I’m considering whether to upgrade the GPU, CPU, or both, or if everything needs a full overhaul. The motherboard is an MSI M7778 Jasmine.

The RX480 is a solid card, but it might be limited by the A8. With some extra funds for a better CPU and motherboard, you could build a quite capable machine.

Sure, I understand your concern about managing the funds wisely. Let's explore some options for using the budget effectively without exceeding 200 units.

I'd skip the older AMD sockets unless you're really trying to save money.

Extreme budget refers to either a high or very low price range. You're wondering if the A8-5500 is a bad chip despite its 3.2 GHz clock and turbo up to 3.7 GHz. Your goal is to upgrade for a more durable long-term solution.

It is also very old, so it would easily be surpassed by today’s processor running at 3GHz or lower.

I don’t have the 480 anymore. I sold it when the PC stopped working. I used the money to get the laptop I’m using now, since I needed one for school. The i5 was sold so I could afford textbooks and study supplies, plus a calculator for my classes.

Consider upgrading to a better processor. The Athlon is often found in budget builds, but it may not offer the performance you need with your current setup. Your existing components like the case, PSU, RAM, monitor, and peripherals are solid, so focusing on the CPU could improve overall efficiency.

Your budget is about 200 dollars. You’re considering a GPU card and a better processor. The 1600AF and 2400G would likely fall within that range. The Athlon chips are around 50 dollars, which fits your budget.
