the laptop is an alienware m17x r3 featuring a core i7 2670qm, 8gb ram, gtx 460gpu, and a 750gb hdd. it runs windows 7 home premium 64-bit. upgrading to windows 8.1 might affect performance, but it should still run smoothly for gaming without noticeable lag.
I remember 8.1 was solid for gaming and it’s a fairly strong setup, so I think you should. Curious about why you didn’t choose Wn10?
It will improve performance in newer titles, though it may run a bit slower in older ones. Windows 10 remains consistent, mostly
there’s no solution to halt the system updates there. my hard drive would quickly become full, and my regular internet plan would disappear soon.
Before proceeding, verify the manufacturer's compatibility with newer Windows versions. Past issues have arisen when laptops need software support for specific features that older OSes lack. This isn't about whether it will work, but about potential compatibility risks. If you decide to update, I’d recommend going straight to version 10 for the UI enhancements over 8.x.
As much as I love Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1 showed a few FPS improvements in games after switching. My advice though is don't switch unless you have a good reason to. Laptops are very different than desktops and some laptops only play well with certain OSes. If Windows 7 is working 100% for you then it's not worth the switch unless there's a specific feature Windows 8.1 offers that Windows 7 does not. Upgrading for the sake of upgrading or an extra X FPS wouldn't be worth the risk or hassle for me personally.
