Discussing the right specs for the FX 8350 with 16 GB RAM and a quad channel Radeon R9 380 graphics feels necessary now that new cards are launching. For my needs—mainly 1080p gaming—I don’t think 4 cores above 4 GHz is sufficient. I’m not worried about power efficiency, so swapping in a 3070 or an older 20-series chip could work. It would let me avoid bottlenecks while keeping the existing hardware functional and reducing e-waste. Please let me know if I missed anything.

It doesn't maintain consistent frame rates and has difficulty reaching 60 frames per second even in games.

Many components influence a CPU, including cache design, IPC, FPU, IMAC, and more. The 8350 might cause noticeable lag on a modern graphics card. Consider moving to another platform now or keep an eye on Zen 3 for its features.

Sure, upgrading the CPU or motherboard will take a while—Zen 3 is the next big step, and 7nm+ performance is really something to look forward to.

For 1080p high/ultra settings, a 2070 super works well for most games to run almost entirely on the CPU. Make sure you have the newest CPU; the 8350 struggles with single-threaded tasks, which are key for gaming performance.

Then observe what it provides before making a decision. As I mentioned, core count and speed aren't the sole factors defining a CPU; the FPU/IPC/cache arrangement and the IMC also play important roles.

The combination of the 30 series is mainly for long-term compatibility, especially since I might eventually replace my CPU. I know the FX design wasn’t great at launch, but I’m sticking with what’s available—why change now?

It’s likely a 5700XT plus something like a 3100 or 4500 would perform better in games—probably at 1080p, maybe around 4K could match it. Not sure if anyone will run those benchmarks though.
