Consider upgrading to Core Ultra 9 285k for better performance.
I'm not gamer but I play games sometimes I'm using PC as for workstation servers I'm currently using 13700k CPU. I should sell my current PC and built a new PC with Core Ultra 9 285k? Or wait for next generation? Thoughts?
You either appear to have sufficient funds for high-end technology or you're out of touch with recent tech developments. For premium tech, you're likely using an i7 rather than an i9, suggesting you're not focused on the latest updates. Since you're not current with the newest tech, the 285K underperforms significantly compared to expectations. Of course, with proper adjustments, it could improve a lot—but that's quite a leap. Direct liquid cooling also plays a role here, which is even more extreme. Consider the 9950X (or the upcoming X3D model), or hold off until Intel introduces 18A, ideally before we're obsolete. If you prefer a more affordable option and don’t want luxury features, the 13700K offers solid performance, so it makes sense why you wouldn’t upgrade.
If you're discussing games, the 285k model will run them at 50W less, but it doesn't justify an upgrade—it won't be worthwhile. Upgrading from one generation to the next is uncommon (13 and 14 are essentially the same for Intel).
The 15th Gen represents a significant upgrade that appeals to even the most dedicated users. It probably played a role in Gelsinger's departure.
Ultra is fine, there is no reason to skip it, it performs the similarly to raptor lake at way less wattage. there just is almost never a reason to upgrade from one gen straight to another. EVER. If looking to build a new PC now, there is not a strong reason to go for raptor lake over arrow lake outside of price. It had very little to do with Gelsinger's exit, locking into doing both TSMC and INTEL pdks was a choice made before he got there, because they did not know the state of the fabs by the time it launched. 18A got pushed forward because of how well it was doing, so 20A that was just really a trial run of 18A was shelved as ramping 18A was of higher priority. Also, CEOs are not product architects, and no one is disapointed internally at the foundation arrowlake provides going forward.
No reason to upgrade your 13700K, especially do NOT get a 285K. If you wanted any upgrade for workstation, make sure you have at least 64GB of RAM and enough VRAM on your GPU. Starting from a 13700K, nothing is really worth upgrading to right now, wait another 2-3 years for a solid upgrade.
