Consider upgrading to AMD or Ryzen based on your needs.
In recent times AMD stands out as a strong option, though I’m focused mainly on gaming. I’ve noticed mixed feedback on the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X with a 2080 Super upgrade from a 1070. My main titles are Destiny 2 and MCC for PC. I intend to try other games but nothing that requires intense competition. I’ll be using my current monitor at 4K 60fps. Overall it looks like the AMD CPU offers better value for what I need, though I’m not sure how it stacks up against Intel right now. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.
your i5 remains suitable for 60fps gaming overall, but if you're planning an upgrade, wait until June 16th for the B550 boards and consider 3300X + 3200mhz or 3600mhz CL16 RAM. this setup also opens the possibility of adding a Ryzen 4000 8-core later. alternatively, opt for a B450 MSI MAX board paired with an R5 3600.
You could check out a used i7-6700K board. If prices aren’t right, maybe an AM4 setup with a Ryzen CPU would be better.
The 3300X really beats those i7s unless they're priced around $80 or less.
No need for a 6700k; it lacks the necessary IPC and 4 hyper threads for an i7. It’s really underpowered.
The only reason for the upgrade is that a friend is purchasing my current setup. I'll keep my gaming laptop as backup.
Are you receiving a complete new setup? If so, what is your budget? We can brainstorm a great option together.
