I assembled this system in 2017 to catch the Zen trend, it has worked fine but it’s deteriorating rapidly. I planned an upgrade a year ago but chose to hold off during the supply rush. Even after the shortage subsided, my budget concerns grew stronger. For some time now I’ve been debating whether to spend around three hundred dollars on a couple of drop-in improvements or wait until AM5 prices stabilize and I can future-proof my build.

Your current mobile model works well with a 5700x or a 5800x 3d. The 5700x offers great value, and you can use it as long as your system has the latest BIOS update. The 5800x 3d remains one of the top choices for gamers, plus it delivers solid multicore performance.
Well, with BIOS version 7.40, your MB support covers all 5000 series Ryzen. Instead of spending heavily on new MBs, consider getting the R7 5700x which nearly doubles CPU performance. I’d suggest the 5800x, though it needs much better cooling for minimal improvement. The 500 series MB is only worth it if you’re aiming for serious RAM speed or need PCIe v4 for a strong GPU.
Unless I'm verifying the correct motherboard, the Asrock AB350 Pro 4 isn't compatible with Zen 3 CPUs.
For the discussion, the 5600X represents a significant upgrade over the Ryzen 5 1500X.
Unfortunately, no one is certain about what the future holds with Zen 4. Many are anticipating prices might drop slightly or that AMD could release more affordable Zen 4 components without the X-series.

You might be correct though. I thought someone on the forum was using a 5900x with a B350 board, but can't recall that one.
To be honest, I don't see the 5700x listed either.

I was thinking about upgrading just one GPU but believe a good MOBO plus a last generation CPU would give me a much better performance increase.
Even if it supports Zen 3, I'm eager to get rid of this MOBO—it feels like my biggest weakness. Thanks for the advice!

I do like my Asus Prime B550 Plus. Although not the best or worst, kinda in the middle really, it has my 5600x ticking over at 4.65ghz all core, and 4,85 single core. VRM's holding up well. Low temps all around.
