In the UK, the network company Virgin Media offers the fastest upload and download speeds locally, but their routers aren't among the best (see TechRadar review). Switching to a model like the Nighthawk D7000 could improve performance, though you have limited knowledge of networking.
It seems like you're wondering if the problem is related to your Wi-Fi signal.
principally though latency remains significant most of the time
They've been working with VM for a while now. Their routers aren't great. I think getting a Wi-Fi access point would improve the connection.
The ping isn't visible in the speed test results, yet it's typically around 50-60ms during games. Updated December 31, 2018 by RMSONE01634 Added ping from CS GO
I previously used a VM and had a third-party router with an older SuperHub configured just for modem use. It didn’t significantly change the connection, though it helped when many devices were on the home network. The older SuperHub struggled with Wi-Fi when more than five to six devices connected, even if only one was active. I’m not sure how severely the SH3 performed, but I was fortunate I didn’t have to test it. Around 50-60ms in-game is acceptable, especially at Virgin :p.
