Considering your setup and budget, evaluating CPU upgrades is a smart move. With your current i5 6500 and the available components, you're looking at solid performance for most tasks. The options you mentioned—9600k, 9700k, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 7—all offer improvements over your current setup. Given your engineering background and software needs, a mid-range upgrade like the i5 9600k or Ryzen 5 3600 could provide a good balance of speed and cost. Your budget of $350 CAD should comfortably cover these choices.

For 1080p resolution, I'd choose a 3600 or 3300X setting.

a 3600/3600x/3600xt ratio, choosing the most affordable one, offers a solid improvement

The i5 9600k is priced at $260, whereas the R5 3600x and 3600 both cost $280. Decide based on your needs and budget.

Keep in mind any of these CPU's also requires a motherboard upgrade, which eats into the budget. The highest CPU you can possibly use (Motherboard support depending) is the 7700K. There's no way to buy a 3300X at retail in Canada at the moment.

You should consider getting the i5 9600K instead. It offers better performance compared to the Ryzen 5 3600X/3600 for your budget.

I chose the 3600X since the 9600K lacks HT, and it offers better overall value.

I’m used to handling heavy engineering tasks. Just add an i7 6700/7700 if you need extra processing power. What specific part of SolidWorks is demanding the most performance? I mainly used a 2C i5-3210M, and only occasionally did I need more for image rendering—it wasn’t a daily requirement.

This existing setup doesn't work with the new version, keep that in mind

Can't fit it into your current setup. At that cost, you'd need to spend a bit more to achieve 3700x.
