I recently switched from a 3070 to a 4070 Super to boost my FPS in Cyberpunk 2077. However, I still feel limited by my 5800X. The improvement wasn’t significant—my average dropped from around 50-55 fps to 55-58 fps. On the 3070, my GPU was only using 80-90% of its capacity, while the 4070 Super showed much lower utilization. At my local store, they’re offering 7700X bundles with motherboard and RAM included, but a used 5800X3D is available at a lower price. What do you think?
CP2077 is a GPU-intensive game, yet you notice only a modest ~3FPS boost even at 1080p. For instance, in this review TPU runs at 5800X and 2080 Ti (~3070) to 3090 (~4070S) which is around 33%: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidi...on/11.html If your machine still has the 3070 model, start by checking for bugs—see if this small FPS gain appears in other demanding titles. Also test different settings like XMP and ReBar.
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I already sold my 3070. Also that article is from 2022 when the game launched. I think with the new Phantom Liberty update, and all the changes they've made, the game demands more from your CPU and GPU. But Im certain Im experiencing a CPU bottleneck, both from GPU utilization and frametime graphs as the GPU waits for the CPU to catch up.
It seems the update isn't necessary, but it looks like the CPU might be the real problem. A GPU benchmark wouldn't be very helpful in this case. Upgrading probably won't make much difference—maybe a 2-5% improvement if things align—and I think there could be an issue with the operating system. With a 3070 chip, it should have worked fine otherwise.
There seems to be an issue with your setup. Cyberpunk doesn’t require a lot of CPU power in my experience. I’d worry about RAM not being at the correct speed or something else affecting performance based on the outcomes. Check that your RAM is set to 3200 or 3600 (whatever its rating is), make sure the CPU isn’t overheating, and so on.
I should clarify, I'm running the game at 1440p with ray tracing minimum settings (the initial minimum ray tracing preset). My RAM is running at higher speeds (confirmed in the BIOS). Latest BIOS as well. I am most definitely being bottlenecked by my CPU haha. All 3070 and 4070 benchmarks I've looked at for the most recent update, using the same CPU, matches the performance I'm seeing. Its a definite CPU bottleneck. But I appreciate the feedback everyone. This has helped me to just cement my decision that I should upgrade to AM5 at this point. ' Edit: Another way that you can be certain an Nvidia GPU is being bottlenecked by your CPU is through the use of DLSS. If you get no noticeable increase in performance between the different DLSS settings like I am (for example the lowest, Ultra Performance and the highest yield pretty much the same FPS), then you can be sure its a CPU bottleneck. The GPU cant push out frames faster because no matter what its waiting on the CPU to catch up. Temps are great (60 degrees average on both CPU and GPU), RAM running at max speeds, and tried with both resizable BAR on and off. In one of the most demanding scenes in the game thus far, Im still only getting 75-80% utilization on a 4070 Super (performance stats in the top left of attached image). There is still 20% more headroom I am not getting. Theres probably gains of 10 fps that are being left on the table here, because my CPU is too slow for the GPU to push up there. Anyway thanks again all!
