Because a 10GbE connection is quite costly, I wouldn't recommend it for a home setup unless I thoroughly evaluate my requirements. A 2.5 or 5 GbE upgrade offers more than enough improvement for most residential needs. The decision really hinges on your specific use case. I’d only consider 10GbE if it meets certain conditions. Are my Ethernet cables Cat 6 or newer? Do I have devices using RJ45 or SFP copper in a server room? Am I managing more than two servers? Am I performing post-production tasks like editing, graphics, or CGI? Is my work focused on engineering or scientific data, with compute offloaded to a server? Do I have over five IP cameras streaming at 720p? Am I running a business? Do I have servers that connect to clients? If more than eight out of ten items are yes, then I’d assess the cost and weigh the benefits, since upgrading to such infrastructure can be expensive, particularly for businesses. When purchasing for a basic 10GbE setup, you’ll need Cat6 or higher cable spools (200ft if not ready), compatible RJ45 connectors (200-pack), crimpers, testers, punch-down tools, switches, and multiple networking interfaces scaled for all clients.
