I currently rely on my ISP's router, but it’s been behaving strangely lately. Occasionally it will just shut down completely. My connection drops, and I notice it restarting itself. Should I reach out to my ISP or simply pay the bill and get a new one? I intended to purchase a separate router myself, but I’m hesitant to spend $80–$150 if it won’t solve the problem. My guess is that the overheating issue might be causing the random reboots. This is just my idea, I don’t have any networking experience.

Note: When I refer to a router here, I mean a router/modem combo (also called a gateway). If you’re looking for suggestions, I’d appreciate your help.

It seems to be getting too hot. Is the device getting enough airflow? Are you placing it in a shaded or cool area?

What's the age of this device? You might want to reach out to your ISP for a replacement. Alternatively, you can install a DOCSIS3 modem or gateway yourself. Verify with your ISP to confirm compatibility.

It's right outside my desk in the open space. Even though I'm on the second floor, I still keep the AC running. It's not close to my computer tower, so it doesn't get much heat from there. It's next to a wall—maybe I should shift it away from it?

Yes, that sounds like a good question. It might be around 2 to 4 years old.
