Hi everyone, I'm an engineering student living in Germany. I'm thinking about purchasing the ROG Zephyrus G14 because of its portability, lightweight build, stylish look, and strong performance. The top model comes with an RTX 2060, a Ryzen 9 4900HS, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB M.2 drive—priced around 2400-2500€ in Germany. But should I wait for AMD's Zen 3 chips to hit the notebook market? How long would it take for those new chips to become available for laptops? In my opinion, a laptop with these specs is best suited for gaming or intensive work over the next 5 to 6 years.
It seems AMD took more than six months to release Zen 2 for laptops after the desktop version. If you need one right away, you might want to purchase it now.
As an engineering professional, I know laptops can handle more than you expect. No delays needed—consider lowering the CPU and boosting RAM if possible. Zen 3 isn’t on the horizon for laptops yet.
It's true, the Eluktronics rp-17 performs well compared to my PC, though it comes with clear compromises.
I’m not trying to convince you, but have you thought about purchasing a more affordable model and upgrading it yourself later? If the laptop supports it, I can’t speak for engineering, but I’ve been studying computer science with an upgraded 400 € laptop that’s an 8-year-old and haven’t faced classes needing heavy computing power. I think it probably isn’t different in engineering since universities can’t assume students have that kind of hardware.
This laptop allows upgrades only to the SSD, RAM slot, and Wi-Fi chip. I’d love to use it for gaming as well, making it a versatile tool. It’s an all-rounder in my opinion. My field of study is mechatronics and robotics, so I’ll be coding, designing, and building a lot of things. That’s why I opted for the high-end model. My study environment is focused on strong multicore processing and a dedicated GPU, which is why I chose this upgrade.
