I'm organizing the parts for my upcoming build and figuring out which chipset fits an R3 3300X. I need options for Ryzen 4000 upgrades too. The choice depends on whether B450 boards will still work with Ryzen 4000 or if I should hold off until a B550 release to ensure Zen 3 support. Thanks ahead!
I’d like to get a B450 occasionally and check if PCIe 4.0 is worth considering later. You’ll spend less money right away and have a board ready. Regarding long-term support, MSI is the only one promising they’ll back the 4000 series on their B450 and X470 boards... so the B450 Tomahawk Max is a solid deal for $115 now!
It depends on the board manufacturer's decision whether they release an update for Zen3. Therefore, some B450 models will work with it while others won't. Keep in mind that upgrading your B450 to support Zen3 means you lose support for all other CPUs before Zen3—like the 3000, 2000 or 1000 series. The B550 seems like a better option, offering support for both Zen3 and Zen2, plus PCIe 4.0 compatibility, which may become more valuable in the future. Also, it's unlikely the B550 boards will cost significantly more than their B450 counterparts.
MSI promises full support across all their boards, including the non-Max models. Other companies haven’t yet decided on a plan. Generally, ASUS was the least supportive regarding added features, though each manufacturer’s choice remains final. If you’re willing to pay extra for a B550, you’ll receive PCIe 4.0 and guaranteed Ryzen 4000 compatibility. If that matters to you, feel free to wait.
It really comes down to the specific offer. I was hoping for a B550, but last week I picked up a brand new Asus ROG STRIX B450-F for 100€ (with Spain's 21% VAT). That’s why I lost patience and went with the other one. If you have a larger budget and flexibility, wait it out.
