It varies based on your activities. For gaming and important tasks, a hybrid setup works well. Use a VPN during work, free Wi-Fi while playing. As long as your PC is secured against other devices, it should be okay. Turn off remote desktop and set the firewall to block all local network traffic except for the gateway.
If I were speaking, I’d maintain my own link. That way you get your own connection without sharing. There’s no security risk involved. It just makes sense because I usually rely on Ethernet, and most times “free” Wi-Fi in apartments is limited to Wi-Fi only.
A solid choice for protection is purchasing a PFsense device or building your own. For my setup, I crafted one with a Rockpro64 running an OpenWRT NIC card. It provides strong security, is user-friendly, and allows full packet inspection via Snort—though this may affect performance.
