I'm considering switching to Windows 10 since it's a free upgrade, provides the newest OS from Microsoft, includes many useful features, and is completely free. I'm just a bit unsure about some details. First, if I need to reinstall my system, how do I locate the CD key? Will it be provided during installation? Second, I'm worried about Cortana's tracking capabilities—how much privacy am I giving up? If I search on Google or perform other activities, will my data be monitored? Also, are games compatible with Windows 10? Have others experienced any problems with it so far? I have plenty more questions right now. If anyone is interested, I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and received a notification yesterday that my upgrade was ready.

Many of these topics I could address, but I lack sufficient knowledge to respond accurately. What I can say is that you need to keep in mind programs aren't updated for Windows 10 yet.

Games rely on Direct X, developed by Microsoft and integrated into your operating system. The newest release, DX12, is only available on Windows 10, and it offers full backward and forward compatibility. No current titles use it yet, so you might wait if you're interested.

Initially, you should be able to upgrade without needing a CD key. If reinstallation is necessary, you can do it without creating bootable media, eliminating the need for a CD key once again. You’ll also be able to revert to Windows 8.1 during the first month, though I suggest creating an image anyway. Games should work fine, according to Sam Z Man. Cortana is entertaining but I’d suggest turning it off since it bothers me. If you decide to use it, expect privacy concerns—since I’ve disabled it, I’m uncertain about the Cortana features. I haven’t run into issues, but Automatic Driver Updates seem bothersome. You’ll likely spend a lot of time tweaking settings, as many options need to be turned off. Overall, I think Windows 8.1 with a clean start menu is the best choice. Hope this clears things up.

If you're undecided, consider waiting a month before making a decision. This gives you time to hear opinions from others and lets new software settle in. In terms of games, there aren't any particularly fresh or innovative titles right now, but you'll notice better performance once DX12 is fully supported. If Cortana bothers you, you can disable it whenever you like and clear your history at any time. I'm generally satisfied with Windows 10, though compatibility varies. You have a year to decide, so don't rush the change!
