I put Windows 7 on my machine and I’m not sure whether to get a free antivirus or not.

You can rely on common sense and tools like Malwarebytes, Avast free antivirus, or AVG free antivirus to stay safe.

I rely on Avast since recommendations come from contacts and I frequently receive torrent links.

AVG is worth mentioning—it’s reliable. It seems reinstalling Windows this week will clarify which updates to get. You already have MWB, and it looks like MSE should be included by default. If not, I’m not sure about the operating system details.

You shouldn't run two antivirus programs at once, since AVG is already suggested.

I generally purchase antivirus software since it's affordable. Currently, I'm using Bitdefender, though Kaspersky also works well.

Kaspersky works well for about sixty dollars. I caught a virus recently, but Malwarebytes detected it and Kaspersky identified only part of it.

Windows 7 includes Windows Defender. Windows 8 features MSE as an alternative to Defender. I still dislike AVG.
